Stolen BMW driven into utility pole (3 photos)

There were no injuries reported

A 2005 silver BMW was stolen and driven into a utility pole at the corner of Pine Street and Cunningham Road, reports a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service news release. It is alleged the driver then fled the scene.

Constable Sonny Spina told SooToday the accused, Kevin Hanka of Patrick Street, went to the police station the next morning and turned himself in.

“It looks like there were other people in the car. Officers are still following up to identify these people,” said Spina, adding it was unknown if the man was intoxicated at the time of the collision.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident, said Spina.

The man was placed under arrest and charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and will appear in court on Oct. 30.
