Beyond Human Limits, a highly interactive exhibition, developed and produced by Science North, brings visitors inside the minds and bodies of extreme athletes and explores the psychology of their motivations and the science of extreme sports.

The exhibit has started its three-week stay at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre. The Beyond Human Limits Northern tour is proudly supported by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and FedNor.

This 1,000 square foot customized exhibit showcases the science, creativity, and innovation in extreme sports. Be prepared to engage with friends and family in a multitude of physical, multimedia and creative challenges.

Visitors will be able to virtually race the backcountry slopes, balance along a highline, or test their hang time endurance. From exhilarating speeds, breathtaking heights and profound depths, to uncontrolled variables such as weather or terrain – witness passionate stories about how athletes prepare and train extensively and carefully evaluate risks, endure intense physical and mental challenges, and maintain a calm focus.

Beyond Human Limits has toured to Science Timmins, the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre in Kenora, the North Bay Museum, the Thunder Bay Museum, and has now reached its final destination at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre where it will remain open from August 23 to September 14.

“We welcome Science North and the Beyond Human Limits Northern Ontario Tour to Sault Ste. Marie. This fantastic exhibit provides a hands-on look at what the human body is capable of doing. I’m excited to have this exhibit at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and I hope everyone has a chance to come and explore,” said Hon. Ross Romano, MPP for Sault Ste. Marie and Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities.

“The Beyond Human Limits exhibition at the Bushplane Museum is a fantastic way for Sault families to learn, create, and have fun together as the school year kicks off. This goes hand and glove with last year’s announcement of $438,000 in federal funding allocated to renovations at the Bushplane Museum. I proudly reaffirm our federal government’s support for Beyond Human Limits in the Sault, and I look forward to many more exciting projects!”, said Terry Sheehan, MP for Sault Ste. Marie.

“I want to encourage community members to check out the Beyond Human Limits exhibit and participate in the fun and educational activities associated with it. Thank you to Science North and the Bushplane Heritage Discovery Centre for working together to bring it to Sault Ste. Marie in what is a great example of thinking regionally and working collaboratively,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano.

“The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre staff and volunteers are thrilled to welcome the Science North Staff and their Beyond Human Limits travelling exhibit to Sault Ste. Marie.  This travelling exhibit is the first of what we hope will be many Science North exhibits to come to our new space and will enhance the opportunity for engaging and entertaining science activities in our community,” said Dan Ingram, Executive Director of the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre.

“Being the leader in science engagement and creating new collaborations across Northern Ontario is a key part of our strategic plan. Through the Beyond Human Limits Northern tour, Science North aims to help stimulate local economies by increasing local spending, providing tourism opportunities and giving local residents access to exciting, new science experiences at these venues. Science North is very proud to work with the NOHFC and FedNor, and our Northern partners on these initiatives,” said Science North CEO Guy Labine.

About the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre

The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre (CBHC) was formed in 1987 by a small group of volunteers wishing to preserve Ontario's rich bushplane and firefighting heritage. Today, the CBHC is a growing organization with many volunteers involved in the recovery, restoration, preservation and display of our own piece of history.

The CBHC preserves and tells the story of Canada’s bushplane and forest fire protection heritage and how it has shaped life in northern and remote parts of Canada. The CBHC collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets a collection of bushplanes and related material and promotes public understanding of their significance by offering quality presentations, education programs and visitor experiences in a public museum facility. It also serves as a centre of research and information on bushplane and forest fire fighting heritage.
