Steelworkers drop dough on soup kitchen

On Dec. 5, 2016, the United Steelworkers District 6, USW Locals 2251, 2724 and 9548 presented cheques to the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent’s Place.

On behalf of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, Joe Krmpotich presented $4,000 to Ron Simm, General Manager, at the Soup Kitchen and $1,000 to Nat Chicarello, General Manager at St. Vincent’s Place. 

This year the Steelworkers Humanity Fund contributed $180,000 to 79 food banks and community food centres across Canada.

USW Local 9548 President Cody Alexander reported that his membership had approved $1,000 donations to each of the following charities – United Way, Women in Crisis, ARCH and the Soup Kitchen.

In 2016, USW Local 2724 contributed over $18,000 to various organizations and charities in the Sault and area. Lisa Dale, USW Local 2724 President presented two Christmas donations of $1,000 each to St. Vincent’s Place and the Soup Kitchen on behalf of her membership. 

The Local 2724 membership also approved donations of $1,000 each to Sault Star Santa Fund, Pauline’s Place, Salvation Army and Children’s Comfort Centre at ARCH.

Mike Da Prat, USW Local 2251 President, presented an additional $1,500 to St. Vincent’s Place and $1,500 to the Soup Kitchen.  USW Local 2251 will also be donating $1,500 to ARCH. 

Members of USW Local 2251 will also be delivering dessert baskets to local members and retirees who are currently in the Sault Area Hospital or at ARCH. Personal essentials bags are being distributed to retirees who reside in local nursing/retirement homes. 

The dessert baskets and the personal essentials cost approximately $9,000. These Christmas donations are on top of the $34,000 already donated this year to various other local charities.
