Steel coil falls at the Husky, flatbed buckled (5 photos)

Three tow trucks arrived; no injuries

In a dangerous incident late Wednesday afternoon, a 22,800 kilogram (50,265 pound) steel coil from Algoma Steel destined for Toronto fell onto the pavement of the Husky/Esso truck stop on Trunk Road.

The wood and metal flatbed trailer of the transport truck carrying the coil was leaning over on its right side, heavily buckled in the middle.

The steel coil was resting on the pavement beside it.

Three large tow trucks from Town & Country Towing were on scene, two of them stabilizing the flatbed trailer while a third laboured to pick up the coil.

A Town & Country driver told SooToday the trailer was most likely compromised because of the coil’s weight.

It was believed that another transport truck and trailer would take the coil back to the Town & Country yard for the time being.

The transport truck driver - who asked not to be identified - told SooToday he pulled his truck into the Husky/Esso truck stop property Tuesday suspecting the load was unsafe, waiting for another truck to come and pick it up.

The flatbed collapsed and landed the coil on the pavement late Wednesday afternoon, the driver said.

The transport truck was from G & M Transport of Regina, Sask.

There were no injuries.
