Drumming up family fun: Squid Percussion comes to the Sault January 26

Affordable quality entertainment through Over the Rainbow Children’s Entertainment Series

SAULT STE. MARIE - You may have heard about the giant squid discovery, but have you heard about Squid Percussion?

The Arts Council wants you to come out and be dazzled by the dynamic, award-winning, drumming act Squid Percussion.

The group of snare drummers is in town January 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. as part of the Over the Rainbow live family entertainment series at the Grand Theatre.

"Thanks to our funding agencies like the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canadian Heritage Foundation and our wonderful corporate sponsors we're able to subsidize the show prices and keep them affordable for families," said Sandra Houston, executive director of the Arts Council. "When you buy a season's passport, you attend the remaining three great shows for one great price."

In addition, theatre-goers will have opportunities to interact with the performers, get autographs, and win door prizes.

Three high-energy family shows remain in the series from January 26 through to April 27 featuring: Squid Percussion, Maritime Marionettes, and Motus O Dance Theatre.

The full line-up is available here.

“Over the Rainbow Children’s Entertainment Series allows grandparents or parents to spend quality time with their young ones, away from tv and computer screens,” Joan Foster, advocate for the arts, said. “We want families to learn to love the arts as much as we do. These performances are wonderful, affordable, family fun, recommended for children ages 4 and up."

The shows can be attended individually by purchasing tickets at the door for $15 per adult and $12 per child.

Buying a $60 passport in advance admits one adult and one child to all three shows and saves families 35 percent off door prices.

“We hope parents see the incredible value being offered here, and buy their passports quickly: less than 20 passports remain,” commented Houston.

All of the performances are at The Grand Theatre, 641 Queen St. E., at 2 p.m.

Season passports can be purchased online or by cash or cheque at the Arts Council, Kevanna Studios, Hilltribe Designs, and Once Upon a Child.

All proceeds raised go towards bringing high quality, creative performers for the following season.

The Over the Rainbow Children's Entertainment Series is a non-profit committee of the Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie and District supported by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canadian Heritage Foundation.

Their goal is to bring families together to foster a love of music, fun, and drama, at affordable prices.

Performances range from magic and dance to international music and plays.

The executive committee is always looking for volunteers and corporate sponsors, especially to sponsor workshops for local students while the performers are in town.

Founded in 1992, the series was resurrected by the Arts Council and committed volunteers in 2008, after a seven year hiatus.
