Soo population is now 800,000, Toronto Star says

If you believe everything you read in the papers, you might find yourself puzzled over a front-page article in today's Toronto Star.
Toronto Star

If you believe everything you read in the papers, you might find yourself puzzled over a front-page article in today's Toronto Star.

Here's how the article, by the Star's ace "demographics reporter," begins:

"Every year, 800,000 immigrants, a population the size of Sault Ste. Marie, arrive on Toronto's doorstep."

Now, we at SooToday.com are hesitant to find fault with a professional demographics reporter.

Especially a Toronto-based professional demographics reporter.

But it seems to us that Statistics Canada was telling us earlier this month that the Soo's population is now just 74,566.

And boy, with 800,000 immigrants showing up every year, Toronto must be growing awfully darn fast!

Online edition corrected

By mid-afternoon, the Toronto paper had changed the online version of the story to read 80,000 instead of 800,000.

Here at SooToday News, we're reluctant to throw stones. Those pesky decimal points do sometimes get misplaced.

But we can't wait to see what the demographics specialists at Canada's largest daily will come up with in their April Fool's edition next week!
