The City of Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to announce its newest green space, Carmen’s Way Green Wall.

With financial support in the amount of $2,500 from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF), the City Parks staff have planted 200 climbing vines over a 2,000 foot stretch of fencing along Carmen’s Way.

The fence runs parallel to the John Rowswell Hub Trail located between Wellington Street West and Conmee Avenue where recognition signage was recently designed and installed by city staff.

The city’s goal was to improve the biodiversity of the area by planting perennial hardy vines, including American Bittersweet (Celastrus scandens), Virgin’s Bower (Clematis virgiana), and Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).

The city would like to bring back nature into this urban space, improving the aesthetics of the area for the adjacent neighbours and the citizens and tourists that utilize the Hub Trail. Vine selection included those that are seasonal to provide colourful fall foliage.

The vines may also reduce damage to the fencing from water and vandalism, which will subsequently reduce the maintenance requirements of the area.

“The funding from TD FEF will provide a vibrant vertical green space along a portion of fencing that has often been subject to graffiti,” said Madison Zuppa, environmental initiatives coordinator for the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

“The Carmen’s Way section of the Hub Trail is a major connecting link between the Waterfront Downtown and Fort Creek and was a perfect location for this project.”

TD Friends of the Environment Foundation supports a wide range of environmental initiatives, with a primary funding focus on revitalizing, animating and stewarding public green spaces. For more information on TD FEF please visit here.
