Something to grapple with (9 photos)

Local tournament focuses on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Competitors, both male and female, ranging from children to teens to adults in various weight categories, took part in the Northern Ontario Absolute Jiu Jitsu Championships held at Algoma University's George Leach Centre Saturday.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu consists of grappling and ground fighting.

The event was organized by Steel City Mixed Martial Arts of Sault Ste. Marie, and included participants from the Sault and across Northern Ontario experienced in other forms of martial arts, such as karate, Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do.

There were mixed gender matches at the younger age levels.

There were prizes for first, second and third place finishers in each weight category.

Saturday's event marked the third year Steel City has hosted such  a tournament, said Steel City's Ryan Zavitz.

While the sport itself involves combat, there were plenty of smiles and handshakes at Saturday's championships.
