OPP NEWS RELEASE

************************ What's that thing hanging off your new gate?

Batchawana, Ont. - Sault Ste Marie OPP are investigating the theft of two underwater gates used to trap sea lampreys.

Sometime over the past weekend thieves attended a sea lamprey trap site in Batchawana and stole the two underwater gates used to trap the lamprey.

The two gates measured two meters (six feet) across and were constructed in a "V" shape.

The caretaker of the site advised that signs and the locking mechanism were also damaged.

A second sea lamprey site in the Havilland Shores area has also been experiencing damage from vandals and thieves.

The sea lampreys are a foreign species to the great lakes.

The lampreys attach themselves to fish and slowly kill the fish.

Attempts to control the species have proven successful using these traps.

Have you seen one of these different types of gates anywhere?

If you see one or know who took these two gates call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).

Help control the sea lamprey population by calling with your information.
