NEWS RELEASE

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

*************************
The Ski & Board I.D. program is a program developed by Searchmont Resort and the Sault Ste. Marie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)  to help prevent ski and snowboard theft.

Officers will be at Searchmont Resort on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to educate and assist skiers and snowboarders with theft prevention.

Here are some tips on how to be smarter than a ski and snowboard thief:

  1. Lock up your equipment every time.
  2. If you leave your skis, poles or board unattended, separate them in different locations. There is no way a thief is going to want to take just one ski and most times the thief won’t have the energy to search for the matching one.
  3. If skiing with a friend, mismatch your skis together. This will greatly discourage theft and possibly confuse others who will think they missed out on a new ski trend.
  4. Watch your equipment from the chalet, if possible.
  5. Identify your clothing as well.
  6. Keep track of the make and model of your equipment.  This could include serial numbers as well as any distinguishing characteristics your gear might have.  If you do become a victim of theft, knowing your equipment will make it a lot easier when filing a police report.
