Shipping season begins - four freighters downbound

The 1,000-footer Edwin H. Gott was one of four bulk freighters that locked downbound today to kick off the 2003 shipping season in Sault Ste. Marie.

Our photo shows the USS Great Lakes Fleet self-unloader in the St. Mary's River shortly after 6 p.m.

Led by the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw, the informal convoy locked through in the following order:

- Roger Blough - Edwin H. Gott - Edgar B. Speer - Presque Isle

The first upbound vessels are expected as early as 8 a.m. Thursday.
