Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig appoints president and academic dean

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig, Chair Lyle Sayers is proud to announce the appointment of Della Anaquod as President and Academic Dean of Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig. Ms. Anaquod began her five-year term on July 2, 2019. 

“Having been a part of the growth and development of Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig for many years, I am proud that we have found a president who can use her considerable skills and experience to advance Shingwaukonse’s vision. I am excited to see where Della takes us in the coming years” said Lyle Sayers. 

Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig is committed to protecting and advancing the vision of 19th century Ojibwe Chief Shingwaukonse. The vision of Shingwaukonse was of a “teaching wigwam” where the children of his communities could learn the skills of the ever-changing society while retaining their culture and identity. The sad reality of our history is that his vision was corrupted through the Shingwauk Indian Residential School.

Ms. Anaquod is of Saulteaux, Cree and Dakota ancestry and is a member of the Muscowpetung Saulteaux First Nation. Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Administration from the University of Regina, a Bachelor of Arts in Indian Studies and Economics from the First Nations University of Canada (formerly the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College), a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan, a Masters of

Business Administration in Executive Education Administration from Royal Roads University. Ms.Anaquod has been working in the education field for over 20 years.

Previously, she was the Dean of Academic and Career Education at  Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Previously, she has served as the Dean of Enrolment Management for the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) and the Dean of Students at the First Nations University of Canada. Her academic experience includes teaching posts in the business management field and the law course for the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of Canada.

“I am looking forward to helping build on Chief Shingwauk’s vision, to create a solid foundation for this generation and for those to come. As the inheritors of his original vision it is Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig’s responsibility to ensure the vision is protected in his honour, in honour of all those who have worked for it throughout the centuries and for all the generations of students to come.” said Ms. Anaquod, adding that “it is our responsibility to ensure we create a safe, holistic learning environment for all our students, rooted in an understanding that learning is a life long journey.”

An inauguration ceremony will be announced in the near future.
