She helps build homes and hope around the world

Local Global Village volunteer, Tammy Paterson, shared her experiences as an international Habitat for Humanity build volunteer on Tuesday evening at the main branch of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library.

Tammy, who has been volunteering overseas since 2010, captivated her listeners as she described her build trips to Kenya, India and Chile.

She also talked about her upcoming trip to Armenia in April 2013 where she will work as a team leader for the first time.

Global Village volunteers are responsible for paying for their own airfare and other expenses; Tammy raises funds for her trips by baking butter tarts and selling them.

The audience was able to try a free sample of her delicious tarts as they enjoyed her impressive slides and photos.

There was an extensive question period during which people asked for more details about the Global Village program.

About Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area

Habitat for Humanity is an independent, non-profit housing program dedicated to building affordable homes in partnership with families.

Homeowners contribute “sweat equity” volunteer hours and then repay a long term, interest free mortgage.

Since 2004, six families have partnered with HFHSSMA to build homes.

These builds were possible with the generous support of many individuals, groups and businesses within the community.

Dozens of volunteers have contributed hundreds of hours of labour on each house.
