Severe thunderstorm watch issued; strong winds, nickel-sized hail possible

In addition to the city, the watch includes St. Joseph Island as well as some areas north of the city

With a cold front moving into the area, Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Sault area as a line of thunderstorms approach.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," an advisory issued by Environment Canada said.

Wind gusts of up to 90 km/h and nickel-sized hail with locally heavy downpours are possible as well.

The watch was issued for areas including:

  • Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island
  • Searchmont - Montreal River Harbour - Batchawana Bay

Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Agawa and Lake Superior Park area.
