Update – North Bay Detachment collision breakdown

NORTH BAY - Members of the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remain on the scene of several motor vehicle collisions on Highway 11 north of Sand Dam Rd, right up to New Liskeard.

Highway 11 remains closed from North Bay up to and including New Liskeard, with hopes of having it re-opened later this afternoon.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. this morning, a report was received that a multi-vehicle collision had occurred on Highway 11 about 4 kilometres north of Sand Dam Rd.

Involved in the collision was a row of north bound traffic consisting of two tractor trailer units following one another, followed by a Purolator truck and then another tractor trailer.

The first tractor trailer begins to fishtail and lose control as a result of ice on the highway, but manages to regain control.

This action causes the following tractor trailer to brake, lose control and jackknife right across both north bound and south bound traffic.

The following Purolator truck hits this tractor trailer, and the tractor trailer unit following the Purolator truck enters the ditch.

There were no reported injuries, however the driver of the jackknifed tractor trailer unit was arrested for impaired driving and transported to North Bay Detachment.

As a result, 49-year-old male Shavinderpal Kang of Mississauga, was charged with driving with over 80mgs of alcohol in 100 ml of blood contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Kang will make his first court appearance on December 18, 2012.

A short time after the first described collision occurred, a south bound Milk Tanker tractor trailer was south bound and was unable to stop and also struck the jack knifed tractor trailer unit across the highway.

A third collision then occurred when a north bound vehicle was unable to stop for the row of stopped traffic and hit a stopped tractor trailer unit.

A fourth collision occurred between two vehicles in the Tilden Lake area, again in attempt to stop and drive on the icy road conditions.

No serious injuries were reported in any of these collisions.

There were also numerous other collisions including a fatal collision further north on Highway 11 and are being investigated by members of the Temiskaming OPP Detachment.

For more information please contact Cst. Renee Taylor at 705-647-8400.

A follow-up release will be sent out once the highway has been re-opened.
