Seven forest fires started in the northeast yesterday

Seven forest fires started in the northeast yesterday, according to the Ontario fire map.

Five were in the Sudbury area, one in Sault Ste. Marie and one in the Timmins area. There are 11 active fires overall in the northeast region.

Timmins 3, was reported around 6:45 p.m. According to the Ontario fire map, it is west of the city toward Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park and is near Keith Lake. It is reported to be .2 hectares in size and being held.

The fire that happened on Highway 655 earlier this week in Timmins is now listed as being out. It was reported May 21 at 6:20 p.m. and was 2.5 hectares in size.

There is also an active fire, Kirkland Lake 1, being held near Thornloe. It is reported as being 15.8 hectares and started May 21 just before 5 p.m.

Other fires in the northeast are:

  • Sudbury No. 9: Reported May 21 at 3:59 p.m. near an area called Waterfall west of Highway 69, 11 hectares in size and classified as being held;
  • Sudbury No. 12: Reported May 23 at 2:33 p.m. near First Avenue in Levack, three hectares in size; status still classified as not under control;
  • Sudbury No. 13: Reported May 23 at 5 p.m. today west of Alban, 0.9 hectares in size and being held;
  • Sudbury No. 14: Reported May 23 at 6:30 p.m. north of Beaver Lake, seven hectares and not under control;
  • Sudbury No. 15: Reported May 23 at 6:29 p.m. between the Highway 6 turnoff and Webbwood, four hectares and not under control;
  • Sudbury No. 16: Reported May 23 at 6:42 p.m. on an island in Lake Panache, 0.1 hectares in size and not under control;
  • North Bay No. 3: Reported May 18 at 2:41 p.m. on an island in Wicksteed Lake. It is one hectare in size and being observed;
  • North Bay No. 6: Reported May 20 at 6:47 p.m. It is 5 hectares in size and under control;
  • Sault No. 3: Reported May 23 at 7:58 p.m. It is .1 hectares in size and not under control.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the fire hazard ranges from moderate to extreme. The areas of most concern are Elliot Lake, Mattawa and Powassan areas.
