Serious collision closes Queen Street (update)

Monday morning update: The public is advised that Queen Street East between Simpson Street and Leo Avenue is now opened. Officers from Traffic Services are continuing their investigation into this collision.

Road closed - Serious collison investigation

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service currently investigating another serious motor vehicle collision and would like to advise the public that Queen Street East is closed from Simpson Street to Leo Avenue. 

At approximately 14:04 hours, officers responded to a vehicle that accelerated and struck a hydro pole at Leo Ave. and Queen Street East. 

The vehicle snapped the pole in two, hydro wires were down and live. 

A male driver was located unconscious in the vehicle. 

At this time a medical cause for the accident is being investigated. 

The driver has been identified as a 60-year-old resident of Sault Ste. Marie and is currently in critical condition. 

Traffic Services is continuing the investigation. 

PUC and City Board of Works have been called out and are assisting. 

The public is advised to avoid the area.
