Statement from MPP Michael Mantha on request for secrecy at Elliot Lake mall collapse inquiry

ELLIOT LAKE - Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha issued the following statement after learning mall owners and engineers have asked that some documents be kept secret at a public inquiry into the Algo Centre Mall collapse.

The purpose of this inquiry is to provide the community of Elliot Lake with some much needed answers in the wake of this tragedy.

Keeping important information from the public will only hinder the ability to learn from any mistakes and prevent this from happening in the future.

Elliot Lakers need to begin the healing process; answers and full disclosure will assist them with this.

I have full confidence in Justice Belanger and his team that this will be an open and transparent process.

I have no doubt that Justice Belanger will carefully consider all documents being submitted, and when confidentiality should be considered.

I have been in communication with my federal counterpart MP Carol Hughes, and we will continue to support the community of Elliot Lake throughout this process.
