The city of Sault Ste. Marie is home to 73,368 people according to last year's census, down 2.4 per cent from the previous federal head count in 2011.

As of 2011, the Sault had 75,141 residents.

Canada meanwhile grew by 5 per cent between 2011 and 2016, to a population of 35,151,728, according to Statistics Canada numbers.

While Sault Ste. Marie's population is falling it isn't the slowest growing city in Northern Ontario.

Elliot Lake (-5.3), Timmins (-3.2) and North Bay (-2.6) all made the list of the 10 cities with the lowest population growth rates in the country.

Sudbury meanwhile is growing. Greater Sudbury saw a .8-per-cent increase in its population, up to 161,531.

Thunder Bay held essentially steady at 121,621.

More to come . . .
