The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA has received a $87,500 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to hire a fundraising specialist in order to identify strategies to develop new revenue sources.

According to a news release issued Friday, the grant was made possible through the Resilient Communities Fund, which was developed by OTF to help non-profit organizations rebuild and recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

“This $87,500 that we are providing to our local YMCA through the Ontario Trillium Foundation is great news for our community,” said Sault Ste. Marie MPP Ross Romano. “With over 300 programs, including services like daycare and before and aftercare, the YMCA is an essential support for so many people in Sault Ste. Marie.”

The funding was received earlier this year, according to Friday’s news release.

"The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be understated,” said Robert Burns, chief executive officer of Sault Ste. Marie YMCA. “The fundraising and community engagement lead position is more important than ever. Thanks to this funding we now have a clear fundraising structure.

“The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA is very grateful for the assistance received for this important role.”

The Ontario Trillium Foundation handed out nearly $112 million in funding for 1,384 community projects and partnerships last year.
