But it was just part of the fun-filled St. Mary's River Run Kayak Races on Saturday

They were just getting their feet wet.

Sault Search and Rescue (SSR) held the first St. Mary's River Run Kayak Races but really it was “just a trial run”, said SSR’s Wayne Spencer.

Not only did the event include 5km and 20km kayak races but also a 2.5km stand up paddle board race.

“We’re jut hoping to get people out on the water to enjoy the St. Mary’s River and of course maybe make a little money for Sault Search and Rescue so that when things go wrong and people need help we’ll be there,” said SSR’s Stephen Ruleau.

This year there were only eight racers throughout all the categories combined, however, said Spencer, this year’s event at the very least covered its costs but, more importantly, it worked out the bugs so that next year’s race can be even bigger.

Spencer said fundraising events like the race are important for SSR so that they’re able to meet expensive operating costs.

Just their insurance alone is $20,000 a year he said.

Spencer said other upcoming fundraiser events this year include a Paint Night and a Craft Show.

SSR had two boats at the event to escort the participants from the start of the race at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, down the river to Bell’s Point (for the longest race) and back.

It appeared to be a fun day for all who attended.

“The St. Mary’s River is a beautiful location. It's flowing right out our front door and you don’t see enough people out on it. I’d like to see more sailboats, paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes out there,” said Ruleau.
