On June 14, 2018 officers with the Patrol Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service utilized two new ATVs to assist in locating two missing hikers.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., officers received a call regarding two hikers that had lost their way in the northeast section of Hiawatha Highlands. Officers were able to utilize the two new ATVs to quickly search the area. The two missing hikers were safely located a short time later and returned home.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service purchased the ATVs in the spring of this year. In the coming months, specially trained officers will utilize this equipment to engage with citizens on the trail systems. Officers will be able to conduct R.I.D.E. programs, attend calls for service on the trail system or areas that are difficult to access by vehicle, and search for missing persons.

Now that the summer weather is here, we know that more people will be out enjoying the trail systems. There are several tips to keep in mind when you are planning to go out on the trails:
    •    Familiarize yourself with the trail or go with people who know the area
    •    Know the weather forecast before you head out and dress appropriately
    •    Bring along items like a flashlight, map, compass, first aid kit, nutrition and water
    •    Tell someone where you are going, and when you intend to be back
    •    Stay on marked trails and don’t venture off into the woods

By being prepared you can ensure that you and your group have the best possible experience on the trails.
