Sault man accused of arson in fire at Batchawana Bay home

HERRICK TOWNSHIP - On January 28, 2016 at approximately 12:25 a.m. Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Batchawana Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire at a residence in the 900 block of Highway 563 in Herrick Township.

The residence was unoccupied at the time.

Damage to the residence was extensive.

OPP Forensic Identification Services and investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshall attended at the scene.

As a result of further investigation, Devon Gagne-Mearow, 20 years old, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

• One count of arson as per section 434 of the Criminal Code (CC).

• One count of mischief over $5,000 as per section 430(3) CC.

The accused was released on a Recognizance of Bail to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on February 29, 2016.
