Sault College student gets another big award

In order to play this partnership role to its fullest, students require outstanding leadership skills.

Sault College is pleased to announce that Caitlyn Nelson, Peace and Conflict Studies and Public Relations and Event management graduate, has been awarded the Bronze medal Award of Excellence in Student Leadership from Colleges and Institutes Canada formerly known as the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC).

The award was given at the annual conference held in Ottawa earlier this week.

News of this honour comes just weeks after Caitlyn received the 2014 Community Driven Award at this year’s Passport to Unity as well as a 2013 YMCA Peace Medallion recipient, demonstrating her commitment to peace through individual contributions made within the community and overseas.

“Canadian colleges offer unbeatable real-world learning opportunities and leadership from incredible teams of post-secondary professionals,” said Denise Amyot, Colleges and Institutes Canada President and CEO, who was present at the event. “As our award winners like Caitlyn demonstrate, innovation and dedication to excellence create positive learning environments for our students and contribute to the success of our broader communities.”

Caitlyn Nelson has made an exceptional contribution both within Sault College and the larger community.

A leader of vision, inspiration and determination, Caitlyn has worked tirelessly and successfully for Sault College and for the community in every initiative she undertook.

She has promoted peace locally through World University Services Canada and her activities as a Head Cheer coach for Sault College.

Most recently, Caitlyn successfully organized the 2nd Annual Cheer for WUSC at the College, bringing in $1600 in donations to help student refugees and raise awareness about global issues. 

Nelson has also worked to promote peace internationally during her time in Ecuador where she lived in a village in the Amazon Rainforest with an indigenous community, assisting them in reclaiming their sustainable and traditional economy in the face of devastation and destruction by multi-national oil companies.

She continues this mission today through her actions as President of the local WUSC committee.
