*********************** Vice President, Human Resources selected

The manager of human resources for the Algoma District School Board has been chosen as Sault College’s vice president, human resources.

Janice Beatty will move into the senior management position on May 26.

"Janice’s selection marks the successful completion of a national search," said Sault College President Dr. Timothy Meyer.

"Janice’s 25 years of experience and achievements in education offer much to Sault College.

"She has clearly established herself as an effective, results-oriented leader with an excellent blend of human resources, business, and financial expertise."

Meyer said members of the selection committee were also impressed by Beatty’s background in facilitating organizational change.

She played a major role in the 1998 amalgamation of six northern school boards.

"Janice provides the skills and depth Sault College needs to become a stronger organization well positioned to capitalize on many opportunities available to us," Meyer added.

"She will be a welcome addition to the college and to the senior management team."

Sault College has been without an executive-level human resources officer since Penny Gardiner retired in January 1999.

The Sault College board of governors approved restoring the vice president, human resources complement position last November.

Serving as the ADSB’s manager of human resources since 1998, Beatty’s responsibilities have included supervision of the human resources department and negotiation/administration of collective agreements for six bargaining units.

She has also administered the terms and conditions of the employment for the board’s non-union staff.

In addition, Beatty has been responsible for implementation of compensation, benefits, and employee assistance programs for approximately 2,500 ADSB employees.

Her portfolio has also included supervision of the board’s health and safety office and initiatives.

From 1978 until 1997, Beatty served as the senior business officer for the former Hornepayne Board of Education.

In January 1998, it became part of the new Algoma District School Board.

"I am very excited about contributing to the growth and development of Sault College," said Beatty.

"The human resources department is fundamental to the success of any organization. I look forward to leading the college’s HR team and working with management, faculty, and staff in service to Sault College students and our community."

Beatty has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Waterloo and Supervisory Officer Credentials.

She has also completed Master of Education courses through the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (University of Toronto) and Certified Human Resources Professional courses.

Beatty and her husband Rex, the United Transportation Union’s general chairperson for central and eastern Canada, have two grown children.

Corrigan, a graduate of the University of Toronto, is continuing his education and working in Toronto.

A second son, Sean, has just completed his first year at the University of Waterloo.
