Sault Ste. Marie:  Catholic Education Week will be celebrated throughout the communities served by the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) next week, from May 1 to May 6. The theme for the week, which was also the school-year focus, is Opening Doors of Mercy

Activities will occur at HSCDSB schools in Blind River, Chapleau, Elliot Lake, Espanola, Hornepayne, Massey, Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa and White River throughout the six days of Catholic Education Week.

"This upcoming celebration of Catholic education is a week that allows our schools to show how we are creating the Catholic leaders of tomorrow.  Many of our graduates become integral members of the communities we serve and beyond.  What they learn in our schools is often translated into their efforts to improve the communities they live in," said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.

Special events planned for Catholic Education Week include the participation of St. Mary's College students in a province-wide mass on Tuesday, May 3; the Seventh annual Walk for Justice on Wednesday, May 4; and the celebration of World Catholic Education Day on Thursday, May 5.

Parents and guardians are invited to participate in the annual Walk for Justice, which includes students learning about areas of the world that are affected by strife, famine or war.  They also learn about actions taken by the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, which funds various projects to help people in such areas.

"As Catholics, it is part of our calling to assist people in need, wherever they are.  Our Walk for Justice provides the opportunity for our students to show their empathy for, and learn more about, people in distress, locally, nationally and globally," said HSCDSB Faith Animator, Sr. Pat Carter, csj.

Schools throughout the Board invite parents and guardians to visit their child's school during Catholic Education Week 2016.
