Huron Central Railway (HCR) is a vital piece of infrastructure for the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma district. It allows us to bring raw materials in and ship manufactured goods out to marketplace.

Ninety per cent of the freight on the HCR comes from Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie, Domtar in Espanola and EACOM in Nairn Centre.

Last week, Doug Ford was in Sault Ste. Marie and he made a commitment to support HCR through this difficult time using the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

This investment will ensure HCR’s future operations and sustainability. It is essential to maintain and enhance the few competitive advantages we have in Northern Ontario and the HCR is one of those advantages. Algoma, Domtar and EACOM rely on HCR to keep their production and distribution costs competitive.

We are committed to making sure business’ like these operate in the most competitive marketplace around and as such will fund the HCR to ensure there future competitiveness.

This morning I met with Kevin Edgson, EACOM’s president and CEO to follow up on a tour I attended at EACOM offices in Sault Ste. Marie yesterday. The reason for my meeting was to follow up on the excitement that EACOM has felt as a result of Doug Ford’s announcement last Friday to help fund the Huron Central Railway (HCR) through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

The Ontario PCs are the only party that has a real plan to enhance the forestry and manufacturing industry to create more good paying jobs for Ontario.
