RIDE stop ends in foot chase, arrest

BLIND RIVER - On Aug. 19, 2016, shortly after 3 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a R.I.D.E check on Hudson Street in the Town of Blind River.

A westbound car approached the R.I.D.E location. Upon speaking to the female driver, the officers determined that there was cannabis marijuana and open liquor in the vehicle. 

As the male passenger was being arrested he became resistant. He then pushed the officer and ran from police.

A short foot chase ensued and the male eventually stopped and was arrested.

As a result, John Roy, 38 years of age from Wikwemikong, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Resist Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest, contrary to section 270 (1)(b) of the CC;
  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance (X3) contrary to section 145(3) of the CC;
  • Possession of a Schedule II Substance-Cannabis Marijuana-Under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and
  • Having Liquor in Open Container in Other than Licenced Premises, Residence or Private Place, contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on September 24, 2016.
