Ponant's Le Champlain is expected to visit the Sault for the first time on Sept. 20, 2019

A record 29 cruise ship visits are expected this year in Sault Ste. Marie, members of the city's historic sites board learned today.

Kathy Fisher, curator at Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site, announced the news at Wednesday's meeting of the board.

As SooToday has previously reported, this year's schedule includes a Sept. 20 visit by Le Champlain, the first in a series of limited-capacity yachts planned by French cruise ship operator Ponant.

Le Champlain has 92 staterooms and suites, two restaurants, a pool, a solarium, a 188-seat theatre, a 200-square-metre main lounge, an outdoor bar and lounge, and a hydraulic platform with adjustable height for easy boarding and access to the sea for Zodiacs, kayaks, paddle-boarding and swimming.
