A total of 46 internship positions are being made available through $1.3 million in funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

Sault Ste. Marie MPP Ross Romano was joined by NOHFC board member James Caicco at Roberta Bondar Place Friday to make the announcement.

“We are open for jobs, and we want to everything in our power to help diversify our economy locally, and try to give back to our young people and be able to help them move forward,” Romano said.

Algoma University will be receiving more than $90,000 in order to hire three interns, primarily for research.

“It’s really important for our efforts to get our research portfolio growing,” said Jennifer Foote, an associate professor of biology at the university. “Two of the positions are for faculty interns, so one is working with me in avian social behaviour, and the other is working in labour migration, and then the third is working in our new office of research and innovation experiential learning hub with Dr. Pedro Antunes.”

Foote says the funding will ultimately help grow the school’s research initiatives.

“It’s essential to get your research program growing,” she told reporters during Friday’s funding announcement. “It’s really challenging to manage a lab and teach five courses a term, so it’s a great benefit for us to have interns to help us start new research projects and get new initiatives going in the community.”

“We have a fund here that is directly geared towards moving the needle economically in our community and in the north,” Romano said. “So I invite everyone - get those applications moving forward, contact our offices here locally at NOHFC, contact my office.”

“Please, call me.”

Romano is also giving people the option of hitting him up on his cell.

His number is (705) 206-2206.

He says it’s probably better to text him.
