Three potential purchasers are looking at Searchmont Resort, a meeting of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation was told Monday.

Duane Buchanan, chairman of the not-for-profit corporation running the ski resort since it went into receivership, said he's optimistic a buyer will be found.

Despite its ongoing difficulties, Searchmont "has a reasonable chance of breaking even" this season, Buchanan told the meeting.

The ski facility suffers from poor local support and 70 to 75 percent of users come from the United States, he said.

The current season has been less than spectacular, in part because Searchmount didn't open until Boxing Day, a week later than normal.

About half of the potential users are snowboarders but the half-pipe has still not been built this year because of an initial shortage of natural snow.

The half-pipe is under construction now, and Searchmont's first snowboard event of the 2002 season is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 10.
