GARDEN RIVER LITTLE RAPIDS TYKE TEAM

The Garden River Little Rapids tyke team will be competing next month in the 2017 Little Native Hockey League Tournament in Mississauga, Ontario. To help get the club’s 16 players to the five-day event, the Port of Algoma stepped up as a gold sponsor for the team.

“It’s quite expensive to send a team to southern Ontario for five days, and we really appreciate the Port of Algoma helping us,” said Andy Rickard, Head Coach and Manager of the Garden River Little Rapids Tyke Team. “The excellent relationship we have with the Port of Algoma is crucial for reconciliation, and we thank them for giving back to our community.”

In recent years, the Port of Algoma and Garden River First Nation have developed a solid relationship.

Last spring, they signed a Reconciliation and Prosperity Accord. Planned in the spirit of healing and reconciliation, the historic agreement speaks of the common vision between the two and highlights the importance of protecting the region’s water, land and air. In July 2016, Port officials signed a unity pact with four area First Nations, including Garden River, which speaks to the shared understanding of the need to protect nature while generating economic diversification to support a brighter future.

“We consider Garden River First Nation and all area First Nations to be crucial allies in our redevelopment initiative,” said Anshumali Dwivedi, CEO of the Port of Algoma, a major transportation infrastructure project that has the potential to change the economic landscape of the Sault Ste. Marie area and all of Northern Ontario. “By continuing to work together with a common vision and understanding, we’ll ensure a sustainable initiative that benefits the region for generations to come.”

Hosted by the Moose Cree First Nation, the 2017 Little Native Hockey League Tournament is taking place March 12 to 16 at four arenas in Mississauga, Ontario. Started in 1971, the annual event has since grown considerably.

This year, the tournament will feature more than 170 teams from First Nations across the province.
