Update: 9:46 a.m.

On Sunday May 4, 2014 at 9:50 p.m., 20-year-old Robert Atkinson, of Glengary Gate Crescent, turned himself in to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service where he was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault.

It is alleged that at approximately 4 a.m. on Saturday May 3, 2014 while at an outdoor location in the area of Gibbs Street at Trunk Road, the accused Atkinson punched the 25-year-old male victim once in the head causing the victim to fall to the ground unconscious.

The victim was transported to Sault Area Hospital with a significant head injury that was deemed to be life threatening.

The victim was transferred to a medical facility in Sudbury later that morning where he is currently listed as being in a stable condition.

Police believe the victim received the head injury as a result of the assault.

The accused Robert Atkinson will be appearing in bail court this morning, Monday May 5, 2014 at 10 a.m.

In the serious assault investigation, the unknown female and the SUV have been identified. The members of the Investigative Services would like to thank the public for their assistance thus far in the investigation.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently investigating an assault that led to one male being hospitalized with serious life threatening injuries.

The assault occurred just before 4 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, in the area of Gibbs Street at Trunk Road.  It is believed that the male victim was struck by another person(s) and knocked to the ground. The police are trying to identify two males and two females that are suspects in this case.

Description of suspects.

Male #1 – Late teens to early 20’s, wearing a dark coloured jacket, blue jeans and a baseball style cap.

Male #2 – Late teens to early 20’s, wearing a dark coloured jacket, dark jeans and carrying a backpack.

Female #1 – Late teens to early 20’s, long hair and wearing a light coloured jacked that has a checker type pattern and tall light coloured high heel boots.

Female #2 – Late teens to early 20’s, long hair and wearing a dark coloured jacket that has a white border along the bottom of it.

Police are also seeking to speak with an unknown female that was in the area. She is believed to have been driving a full sized sport utility vehicle (possibly a ford Expedition).

The Sault Ste. Marie police are requesting that anyone who may have been involved in or witnessed the incident please contact the Sault Ste. Marie Police with any information pertaining to this incident.
