The driver of a partially-full school bus has been charged in relation to a motor vehicle collision which occurred downtown late last week.

Sgt. Ray Magnan of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said the 60-year-old school bus driver was at fault when he struck a minivan at the intersection of Wellington and March Streets on Friday afternoon at about 4 p.m.

Magnan said the bus was turning left on to Wellington Street when the collision occurred.

“The school bus turned and failed to yield to the (van) and struck the (van),” said Magnan.

The bus was ferrying children home from school at the time, no injuries were reported.

The bus driver did stop at the stop sign and Magnan said speed was not a factor.

Magnan said the driver of the school bus was charged with Failing to Yield to Traffic on Through Highway under the Highway Traffic Act.

A representative for First Student Canada was not immediately available for comment.
