Officials from Sault Ste. Marie City Police, OPP, RCMP, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Canada Customs and the International Bridge Authority met today to discuss implications that the war in Iraq might have on the International Bridge.

The Authority confirmed that the bridge will remain open to traffic.

At present, the bridge is operating in the normal manner and it is anticipated that it will continue to do so.

The Authority advised that the bridge would only be closed if there were an imminent danger to the bridge itself or to the bridge users.

The agencies discussed a contingency plan that could be activated in case of extended traffic delays.

At time of writing (4 p.m. Thursday), there were no delays at the border.

Should the plan be required and implemented, it will be posted on this site immediately.

Border authority agencies request that you do not phone them for delay times but use the internet service instead.

There is a further meeting scheduled for next week to review the matter.
