Sault Police are on scene after Sault Fire Services and EMS paramedics responded to a fire at 549 Cathcart St. early Monday morning.

The building, now a rooming house, was once Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

The cause of the fire, and extent of the damage, is unknown at this time.

“Sault Police are investigating. This is believed to be suspicious in nature,” said Lincoln Louttit, Sault Police spokesperson, speaking to SooToday.

Louttit said the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in, stating further details, including information regarding any fatalities or injuries, will be released as they become available.

Three Sault Police vehicles were on scene Monday afternoon, yellow tape surrounding the building.
