NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE. MARIE POLICE SERVICE

*********************
On Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Trunk Road and Highway 17 East. The collision involved three motor vehicles and as a result, the highway was closed for approximately 4 1/2 hours.

A motorhome operated by an 85-year-old male from Indiana was travelling westbound on Highway 17 East entering Sault Ste. Marie. As the vehicle travelled into the intersection at Trunk Road, it lost control and crossed the roadway into the eastbound lane of traffic just west of the traffic lights.

The motorhome then collided with the driver’s side of a white Ford pickup truck that was in the eastbound turning lane on Trunk Road. The driver of the motorhome was then ejected from the vehicle as it continued in a westbound direction and struck the front end of a black Dodge pickup truck that was in the eastbound turning lane on Trunk Road.

A passenger in the motorhome was able to gain control of the vehicle and direct it back into the westbound lane where it came to rest. Fire Services attended the scene and a male and female were extricated from the white Ford pick-up truck. Paramedics attended and five people were taken to the hospital.

Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police, Anishinabek Police Service and Batchewana First Nation Police Service attended the scene and assisted with traffic control. At this time, officers with the Traffic Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are continuing this investigation.
