The tipster in the district is still on the line and communicating.

The latest update indicates that a vehicle occupied by a man and woman was swept off Mission Road by a sudden surge in flood waters.

A large area of Mission Road has been washed away to a depth of about five or six metres and the vehicle occupants are believed to have been washed into the hole.

Their condition is unknown at this time and the vehicle was not located by the time of this update.

First responders were on the scene by about 6:30 a.m.

4:30 a.m. update

A reader reports the village of Bar River is at this point completely awash with the river flowing through many homes.

"The Bar River Road is impassable for a stretch of approximately two miles," says the tipster. "A neighbour's trailer has floated away as has another neighbour's jetty and two canoes."

"Several people have told me that they have lost everything in their basements. Many have just managed to relocate vehicles before they were inundated or swept away in the current which is quite strong."

Original story 3:30 a.m.

A reliable source tells SooToday.com that Highway 552 is closed 4 kilometres north of Highway 556 because that's where a bridge crosses the Goulais River.

Just north of Kirby's Corner.

The river appears to be eroding the ground around the footings of the bridge and there are fears it may be structurally unsound.

Sault Search and Rescue has been deployed to Highway 552 for health and welfare checks, reports the tipster.

Awares and Searchmont fire departments are also on scene to assist.

SooToday.com will have more information on this developing story as it becomes available.

Other district areas of flood concern include:

- Theilman Road, which is washing out in two places a couple of kilometres in from Pine Shores Drive. Boulders and trees are reported on the road.

- Church Street inland from near Echo Bay has a flooded sections.

- Highway 17a at Church Street and at Highway 638 is now impassable

in both east and west lanes.
