Pickup truck jumps curb, hits pole, lands in church parking lot (4 photos)

No one was taken to the hospital

A pickup truck jumped a curb, knocked over a street light, then landed in the parking lot of a former church this evening said Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.

The incident took place along the 300 block of Cathcart Street at around 10:20 p.m.

One of the pickup truck's occupants hit their head and, along with another occupant, was looked at by paramedics with Emergency Medical Services but no one was taken to the hospital said fire Captain Dave Boucher.

After smashing through the street light, the pickup truck rested in the parking lot of the former Ignatius Roman Catholic Church.

The old church's owners, who were on scene, didn't think there was any damage to their property based on what they could see.

When the fire department first arrived the street light was still live so PUC was called to disconnect the power said Boucher.

A gas smell filled the air around the scene.

Firefighters examined the former church and Union Gas was called as a precaution.

The smell turned out to be coming from the vehicle and not a safety concern said Boucher.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service also attended.
