As the United States launched its first Tomahawk missle attack (shown) against Saddam Hussein, local peace activists have announced an emergency peace vigil in support of the Iraqi people.

The Sault Ste. Marie Peace Alliance announced early this morning that the vigil will take place at 5 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at the Court House on Queen Street.

"There will be an emergency gathering of all those who oppose this unjust and unlawful war against Iraq and the Iraqi people," organizer Shawn Meades said.

"We ask all participants to alert friends, family, and neighbours to this vigil, and that if people do not wish to stay long, they may leave a flower, candle, or any other token of remembrance in honour of those who will die."
