NEWS RELEASE
SAULT STE MARIE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce (SSMCOC), Tenaris and Canadian natural resource leaders will gather in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday, July 26 for an insightful discussion on the importance of the resource-energy-manufacturing supply chain.

At this Chamber of Commerce event, members and industry representatives will learn how Sault Ste. Marie and all parts of the country benefit when Canada’s resources are developed.

“Resources are key to Canada’s prosperity today and tomorrow. As part of the resource and manufacturing supply chain, whether advanced manufacturers, technology innovators, environmental scientists, or other service and engineering providers, their impact is felt in every community across Canada. The connection between the resource-energy-manufacturing supply chain is a significant economic driver and job creator of the future,” states Don Mitchell, President of the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

The opportunities and challenges facing the resource and manufacturing supply chain are of interest to business and community leaders across the country. Sault Ste. Marie is no exception, and as the Alternative Energy Capital of North America, Sault Ste. Marie will have a very unique opportunity to hear from key influencers within the energy, mining and steel sectors during the event on July 26.

The event will include Sault Ste. Marie investment updates from Tenaris and Noront as well as a panel discussion with national industry association leaders who will discuss Canada’s resource sectors in the context of national and global contributions.

Speakers will include:

  • Perrin Beatty, PC, OC, President and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Chamber of Commerce (remarks via video)
  • Canadian Steel Producers Association President and CEO, Catherine Cobden
  • Petroleum Services Association of Canada President and CEO, Gary Mar
  • Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Vice President Policy, Mathew Wilson
  • Tenaris Canada President, Guillermo Moreno
  • Noront Vice President of Development, Stephen Flewelling

“The natural resource sector development is a significant and symbolic attribute of Sault Ste. Marie and many key industry sectors continue to foster economic growth and diversification for our community. In 2015, Sault Ste. Marie was recognized by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce as a “Resource City”. The growth of the natural resource sector means more jobs, government revenue and investment in local communities like Sault Ste. Marie,” says Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce CEO, Rory Ring.

The SSMCOC notes that Sault Ste. Marie is the central link in the natural resource development supply chain through pipe manufacturing and is one of Canada’s largest manufacturers of steel.

“Canadian steel is a driving force of innovation, with $2 billion invested in new technologies and innovative ways, to make steel stronger and less expensive, while maintaining the world’s most widely used industrial material,” adds Mitchell.

The Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce would like to thank its partners for this event: Tenaris, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Steel Producers Association, the Petroleum Services Association of Canada, the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, and Noront for their contribution to this event and developments in the natural resource sector.

The panel discussion will take place at Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront on July 26. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for registration, with lunch and panel starting at 12 noon. Advance registration is required for this event and 48 hours advance notice is required for cancellations. Seating is limited for this event and early registration is strongly encouraged.
