Firefighters with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services quickly extinguished a garage fire early this afternoon in the P-Patch, says platoon chief Stan Martynuck.

The owner of the house near the corner of Pentagon Boulevard and Promenade Drive was doing some woodworking in the detached garage when he noticed smoke and called the fire service, said Martynuck.

"Of course our first concern with a garage fire is — is it attached or detached," said Martynuck.

Firefighters arrived to find a smouldering fire, with white smoke coming from the eaves of the garage.

A handheld fire extinguisher was initially used on the fire but hoses were soon employed.

The fire was extinguished before it could spread to other parts of the two-car garage or to the nearby houses.

Martynuck said an oxygen acetylene torch was located in a separate area in the garage and was not exposed to the fire.

Nobody was injured in the fire, said Martynuck.
