More than 20 members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union held a lunchtime information rally today at the Sault Court House.

"We are making the public aware of the issues and themes of our bargaining," local mobilizer Beth Anich told SooToday.com.

"We've lost 20,000 members since 1996," Anich said.

OPSEU's 800 members in the Soo work at the Court House, the Sault Jail, Community and Social Services, Northern Treatment Centre, the Ministry of the Environment, and other provincial offices.

A province-wide vote on the government's offer will take place Feb. 26, 27 and 28. Results are expected to have been tabulated by March 1, Anich said.

The union is recommending its members reject the offer.

A brochure handed out by OPSEU members today contained no less than seven references to "Walkerton" and "Walkertonization."

"After 6-1/2 years of cuts, layoffs, privatization and mismanagement by the Conservatives at Queens Park, the Ontario public service is in crisis," the brochure said.

The earliest date on which a legal strike could occur is March 13.
