The 2017-18 Operation Smile campaign at St. Mary’s College once again had organizers grinning from ear to ear.

This year Operation Smile raised $6,655.68, which surpassed the goal set by the Grade 12 religion class taught by Ms. Rita Trecroce. The funds raised will provide 27 children in third world countries with a life-saving reconstructive surgery to repair cleft lip/cleft palate.

“I am so proud of my Grade 12 religion students for the care and compassion they show towards those less fortunate. They know they are called to do God's work and they are very humbled by this experience each year,” said Trecroce.

Mackenzie Tremblay was one of the Operation Smile shirt designers this year. It was their most popular design to date with three print runs required to keep up with requests.

"The shirts were very well received, which was amazing. It's such a great feeling to know that I got to contribute to such an incredible cause,” said Tremblay.

Another popular event this year was a school-wide Mario Kart Ultimate Grand Prix video game tournament with several teams of students and teachers participating. Kathleen McDonagh-Forest helped organize the event.

"I am so humbled to have been part of this fundraiser and I really appreciate the amazing support we received. I know my fellow classmates are ecstatic about attaining our goal to allow twenty-seven children to receive the surgeries they require,” said McDonagh-Forest.

The ‘smiley fries’ and ‘smiley cookies’ campaigns were once again hot sellers. Next year’s campaigns will begin in October and like this year, are expected to go well beyond the one week they are usually scheduled to run.
