Ontario reports 2,941 new COVID cases Wednesday

Today's update also includes 136 new hospitalizations, 4,361 recoveries, and 44 deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,941 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 5). 

Today's report includes 4,361 recoveries and 44 new deaths.

Today's deaths include one person between 20 and 39 years old, 11 people between 40 and 59 years old, 19 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 13 people over 79 years old. 

Since yesterday, the province has reported 136 new hospitalizations and 33 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 5 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 34,976 active cases, down from 36,440 reported yesterday.
  • 2,075 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 2,167 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 818 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 886 yesterday) and 620 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 609 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 45,767 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 6.6 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 29,179 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.3 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 924 are from Toronto, 565 cases are from Peel, 254 are from York Region, and 65 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Today's cases include 523 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,194 people between 20 and 39 years old, 871 people between 40 and 59 years old, 307 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 49 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 132,603 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 4, which is up from 88,871 on May 3.
  • As of 6 p.m. on May 4, the province reported 5,599,723 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 381,123 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 479,633 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 436,470 recoveries and 8,187 deaths, of which 3,929 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,226.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 166.6 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 9.9 per cent from last week (April 19 to April 25).

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 339 cases, weekly rate of 16.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 338 cases. There are 30 known active cases, including two people who are temporarily in the region but the case is not part of the local numbers. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 361 cases, weekly rate of 11.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 363 cases. There are 16 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 649 cases, weekly rate of 94.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 653 cases. There are 104 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,952 cases, weekly rate of 31.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,975 cases. There are 86 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 189 cases, weekly rate of 61.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 191 cases. There are 22 known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 957 cases, weekly rate of 73 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 974 cases. There are 75 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,120 cases, weekly rate of 22.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,124 cases. There are 45 known active cases.
