Ontario reports 213 new COVID cases Thursday

The province reported 183 new recoveries and 14 deaths in today's update, 12 deaths occurred in February and May 2021 but were previously unreported

Public Health Ontario reported 213 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 5). 

The report includes 183 new recoveries and 14 deaths. Twelve of the deaths reported today were from February and May 2021 and were previously unreported.

The deaths include five people between 40 and 59 years old, seven people between 60 and 79 years old, and two people over 79 years old.

Since yesterday's report, nine people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and two people were admitted to an intensive care unit.

The August 5 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,706 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 1,690 yesterday.
  • 113 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • There are 110 patients in intensive care units with COVID-related illness (of those, 32 no longer test positive for COVID-19).
  • 58 people are on ventilators due to COVID-related illness (of those, 19 no longer test positive for COVID-19).
  • The province reported 23,494 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 1.2 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 8,669 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.6 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 14 are from Waterloo, 44 are from Toronto, 31 cases are from Peel, five are from Simcoe-Muskoka, four are from Grey-Bruce, and 18 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 32 individuals aged 19 and under, 102 people between 20 and 39 years old, 54 people between 40 and 59 years old, 19 people between 60 and 79 years old, and five people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 551,338 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 540,258 recoveries and 9,374 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,741.9 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 9.2 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 21.1 per cent from last week.

Vaccines

  • There were 58,213 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday.
  • 19,710,224 doses of vaccine have been administered.
  • In total, 9,189,535 people have been fully vaccinated.

Northern Ontario

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 406 cases, weekly rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people. There is one known active case.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 653 cases, weekly rate of 3.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 655 cases. There are five known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,147 cases, weekly rate of 9.4 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,149 cases. There are eight known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,167 cases, weekly rate of 1.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,186 cases. There are seven known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 208 cases, weekly rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,102 cases, weekly rate of 2.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,101. There are two known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,345 cases, weekly rate of 1.3 cases per 100,000 people. There are two known active cases. 

The data from Northern Ontario health units is based on what was available at 10:30 a.m. today.
