More residents of Sault Ste. Marie are finding their way to the local Contact North online learning centre to access educational and training opportunities.

Mayor Debbie Amaroso will be making a visit to the local Contact North online learning centre in Sault Ste. Marie on April 8, 2014 at 7 p.m. to experience first-hand the ease of online and distance education.

“Our online learning centre saw an increase of 155 percent in registrations between the Fall 2012 semester and the Fall 2013 semester,” says Alexandra Benson, Contact North Online Learning Recruitment Officer, Sault Ste. Marie online learning centre. “More students are discovering the benefits of online learning with flexibility and cost being important factors.”

Contact North, Ontario’s distance education and training network, partners with Ontario’s 24 public colleges, 22 public universities, over 250 public literacy and basic skills providers, and the government of Ontario to provide local access to education and training opportunities.

“Ensuring that residents of Sault Ste. Marie have educational and training opportunities through online and distance education is beneficial to this community. Students can reduce their education costs by not having to travel away from home to attend courses out of town,” says Mayor Debbie Amaroso.

The Contact North online learning centre, located in Sault College, provides free use of computers with high-speed Internet to connect to online courses and to complete their course work.

Students can also participate in their classes by using the web conferencing, videoconferencing and audioconferencing platforms available at the centre.
