Ontario's Special Investigation Unit has been called in after a North Bay man died after being tasered by a North Bay Police officer early this morning.

In a news release, A/Inspector Dan Webber said a call came in at 5:04 a.m requesting officers go to a local residence with respect to a domestic disturbance.

Shortly after their arrival the officers tried to arrest a man in the home.

While arresting him a conducted energy weapon (taser) was used. An ambulance was called as the man appeared to be in medical distress.

He was taken to the North Bay Regional Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

"The Ontario Special Investigation Unit has been contacted as they investigate all incidents whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault," said Webber.

"As the matter is within the investigative mandate of the SIU the North Bay Police Service will not disclose anything further at this time."
