Nominations sought for new tourism awards

Tourism Sault Ste. Marie has created a new award to recognize excellence demonstrated by businesses, employees and volunteers in the tourism industry.

The first of the award presentations will occur on May 3 at a dinner-dance held specifically for the occasion.

Nominations are being solicited from within the industry.

The following is the full text of today's announcement from Tourism Sault Ste. Marie:

Wednesday March 1Z 2002 Tourism Sault Ste. Marie (a division of SSMEDC), is proud to announce a new initiative that will recognize excellence in the local tourism industry.

The first ever, Tourism Annual Awards will be handed out at a ticketed dinner dance event being held on Saturday May 3, 2003.

The four award categories are: Tourism Award of Excellence, to be given to an individual who has significantly impacted the development of tourism in Sault Ste. Marie.

Business of the Year Award, to be given to a for-profit business in the private sector that has demonstrated leadership through investment financially to establish a new tourism business or to expand or enhance an existing business.

Customer Service Award, to be given to a front line staff member, in recognition for their work in contributing to the betterment of the tourism experience for visitors to Sault Ste. Marie.

Volunteer of the Year Award, designed to recognize an individual whom, while functioning as a volunteer, has made a significant contribution towards strengthening our local tourism economy by bringing visitors to Sault Ste. Marie and that has had a positive financial impact through filling accommodation, restaurants, shops and attractions through their efforts.

Over 200 local tourism organizations have been invited to submit nominations.

Award selections will be made by an impartial committee.

Deadline for nominations is April 2, 2003.

The award itself is a beautiful piece of sculpted artwork and was commissioned by Tourism Sault Ste. Marie to local artist Tim Barthelmes.

Its design reflects the artist's expression, capturing a number of the naturally gifted elements that contribute to tourism experiences in the Sault Ste. Marie area.
