No new wildland fires; number of active fires down

There are currently six active fires in the region

The number of active wildland fires in the northeast region is down and no new fires were confirmed in the latest update from Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services.

There are currently six active fires as of late afternoon Sunday, down from nine yesterday.

Among the active fires is Timmins 1, located 2km southeast of Morin Village and 0.5km north of Barager's Lake. The fire was confirmed on May 10 and currently has a perimeter of 1,445 hectares. 

There are currently 15 FireRanger crews battling the blaze, which is currently being held.

"All use and occupation of Crown Lands and roads in Miramichi Township, with the exception of Nabakwasi Rd. and Churchill Rd. is prohibited unless authorized by a travel permit issued by the Timmins District of the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry (NDMNRF)," a release noted about the fire.

"All use and occupation of Crown Lands and roads in Garibaldi Township, easterly of Meteor Lake Road to Sheard Township and northerly from Highway 560 to Miramichi Township, with the exception of Highway 560 and Nabakwasi Rd. is prohibited unless authorized by a travel permit issued by the Timmins District of the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry (NDMNRF)," the release also said. 

Other active fires in the region include:

  • Sudbury 4, which was confirmed on May 10. It is a 212-hectare fire located 3km east of Estaire and 1km south of Nepewassi Lake Rd. and under control.
  • Sudbury 7, which was also confirmed ony May 10. It is a 221-hectare fire located 600m north of Ashigami road and 0.3km west of Ashigami Lake Rd. East. It is under control.
  • Sudbury 11 was confirmed on Friday and is an 88-hectare fire located 2km northeast of Mink Lake. It is under control.
